Anthropic Forced to Shut Down New AI Models Within Days of Launch

The Trump administration ordered Anthropic to shut down its two newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, citing national security grounds under export control authority. The directive, issued by the Commerce Department late Friday, required blocking all foreign nationals from access, including Anthropic’s own foreign-born employees, making selective compliance effectively impossible and forcing a full global suspension.

The export control directive targeting Fable 5 and Mythos 5 arrived days after both models launched publicly, which is the part that should get attention. Shutting down a product within its first week of release is not a routine compliance adjustment; it suggests the government was tracking the deployment in real time and moved faster than Anthropic anticipated. The mechanism here, export control law applied to AI model access rather than hardware or code transfer, is relatively novel and extends a regulatory framework built for semiconductors and weapons systems into the domain of inference endpoints. That extension has been developing quietly since the Biden-era AI diffusion rules, and this action is the most visible enforcement of that trajectory so far.

Anthropic’s own statement was pointed: the company said it believes the government should be able to block unsafe deployments, but that this action did not follow a transparent or technically grounded process.

At $965 billion in valuation, Anthropic is not a startup that can absorb regulatory friction quietly. Other frontier labs, including those with significant foreign national workforces, are now looking at their own deployment pipelines with different eyes. The immediate practical question is whether export controls applied this way will push model access offshore rather than restrict it, since foreign governments and well-resourced foreign companies can build comparable systems without needing US API access. Argentina’s recent posture of minimal AI regulation is one data point; the EU’s more structured but permissive approach to AI deployment is another. Capital and talent follow permissive jurisdictions when regulatory uncertainty becomes a business cost rather than a manageable compliance overhead.

The broader pattern is familiar from semiconductor export controls: rules designed to slow adversaries often accelerate the development of alternatives, and the lag between restriction and domestic capability-building abroad has been shortening with each cycle. Whether this holds for frontier AI models is the real question the next six months will answer.
