Anthropic Launches Claude Science Ahead of Confidential IPO Filing

Anthropic has launched Claude Science, a research workbench that connects existing Claude models to more than 60 preconfigured scientific databases spanning genomics, proteomics, single-cell analysis, and cheminformatics. No new model is involved. The product reorganizes access to tools researchers already use separately, and it is available immediately in beta to all Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.

The strategic logic here is less about science than about the IPO filing sitting at the SEC. Anthropic has filed confidentially to go public, and Claude Science fits a recognizable pre-listing pattern: verticalize the product, demonstrate enterprise stickiness, and show revenue diversification beyond raw API consumption. The competitive pressure is real. OpenAI released GPT-Rosalind in April 2026, a biology-specific model restricted to qualified U.S. enterprise customers after a safety review. Google DeepMind has bundled AlphaFold, AlphaGenome, and more than 30 life science databases into its Gemini for Science platform. Anthropic’s counter is not a specialized model but broader access at existing subscription tiers, which is a deliberate bet that workflow consolidation beats model differentiation for the research market.

The reviewer agent that checks citations and flags errors still runs on the same underlying model it is reviewing, which Anthropic acknowledged directly. That is a meaningful caveat for any institution treating the output as peer-review-ready.

The auditable history feature, which logs every line of code, the environment it ran in, and the full message thread behind any output, addresses one of the more serious institutional objections to AI-assisted research: reproducibility. Researchers can fork a session mid-analysis to compare two approaches without losing the original, which is a practical answer to a real methodological problem rather than a marketing feature. Early adopters at the Allen Institute and UCSF Brain Tumor Center have already used the platform to compress literature review and germline analysis workflows, according to TechCrunch. Novo Nordisk is also named as a customer, which gives the product institutional credibility that matters when pitching enterprise procurement teams ahead of a public listing.

Anthropic is offering up to $30,000 in credits across as many as 50 research projects, with grant applications closing July 15, 2026 and recipients announced by July 31. The timeline is tight enough that the announcement cohort will likely land before any IPO roadshow, which is probably not a coincidence.
